Skin Cancer Statistics

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Skin Cancer Prevention Ultraviolet (UV) rays can reach you on cloudy and hazy days, as well as bright and sunny days. Skin cancers account for about 80% of all new cancers diagnosed each year in Australia. Skin cancer costs the health system around $300 million annually, the highest cost of all cancers. The two most common types of skin cancer—basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas—are highly curable. However, melanoma, the third most common skin cancer, is more dangerous, especially among young people. In 2006,*2 53,919 people in the United States were diagnosed with melanomas of the skin, 30,560 of them men and 23,359 of them women. That same year,2 8,441 people in the United States died of melanomas of the skin, 5,477 of them men and 2,964 of them women. Age and Skin Cancer

Like most cancers, skin cancer is more common with increasing age, but malignant melanoma is disproportionately high in younger people. Malignant melanoma is now the most common cancer in young adults (aged 15-34) in the UK. Over the last twenty-five years, rates of malignant melanoma in Britain have risen faster than any other common cancer.

Although non-melanoma skin cancer is extremely common, in the vast majority of cases it is detected early and is not life threatening. Malignant melanoma survival rates have been improving for the last twenty-five years and are now amongst the highest for any cancer. More than 2,600 people die from skin cancer each year in the UK. Most skin cancer deaths, more than 2,000 each year, are from malignant melanoma.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States.  The two most common types of skin cancer—basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas—are highly curable.  However, melanoma, the third most common skin cancer, is more dangerous, especially among young people.  Research shows that most skin cancers can be prevented if people are protected from UV light. 

Malignant melanomas are the least common but most serious type of skin cancer, with more than 10,400 new cases diagnosed in 2006.  In 2006 over 81,600 non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) were registered in the UK but registration is known to be incomplete.  Almost a third (31%) of all cases occur in people aged less than 50 years and in the age-group 15-34 malignant melanoma is the most common cancer (when NMSCs are excluded). 

This is an unusually young age distribution for an adult cancer and emphasises the importance of its prevention and early treatment to avert the potential loss of many years of life.  The Cancer Atlas of the UK and Ireland, which analysed rates at local authority and health board level, showed that male and female melanoma incidence rates have a very similar geographical distribution.  In the UK, the national skin cancer prevention programme, SunSmart, is run by Cancer Research UK and mainly funded by the UK Departments of Health.

5. A scar-like area (white, yellow, or waxy in appearance) which often has poorly defined borders. The skin itself appears shiny or taut.

However, even if basal cell carcinoma symptoms show a less frequent signs, it can indicate the presence of an aggressive tumor.

Winter Burn

With the summer leaving and winter coming up shortly, most people won't be thinking of skin cancer, or putting sun protection on exposed skin. This is an incorrect idea, and if you are active outside, you should be aware that the sun will still be able to damage even though the day seems cold.
There have been many times when I have come home from skiing with a red face, only to develop into a full fledged burn by the next morning. This is mainly due to the reflection off the snow, and of course the fact that while you are outside, the cold makes you forget that the sun can be burning you as you play. I learned the hard way to bring sun screen with me in the car.
